Satellite communication in modern warfare has ceased to be an exotic option and has turned into a basic command tool. It ensures data transmission where ground infrastructure is destroyed or unavailable and makes it possible to maintain the controllability of units in difficult conditions.

At the same time, satellite systems are not a universal solution. Their effectiveness depends on the tactical situation, the level of the unit, and the availability of alternative communication channels. That is precisely why, in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, satellite communication is used as part of a multi-level system, and not as the only channel.

The Role of AFU Satellite Communication in Modern Warfare

For the Armed Forces of Ukraine, satellite communication performs the role of a «last support» of command in situations when other channels become unavailable. It is used to coordinate the actions of units, transmit reconnaissance information, and support command posts.

Its key value lies in its independence from ground networks. Even in the event of massed strikes on infrastructure, the satellite channel makes it possible to maintain basic controllability. However, such autonomy does not mean full security or stability.

That is precisely why satellite communication is considered a critically important but limited resource that requires competent application.

Limitations and Risks of Using Starlink

Starlink has become one of the most widespread satellite communication solutions at the tactical level. Its rapid deployment and availability have made the system convenient for many units.

At the same time, Starlink has a number of risks that manifest precisely in combat conditions. An active terminal can be detected, the communication channel can degrade under the influence of radio-electronic assets, and the overload of the network in a combat zone reduces the quality of data transmission.

As a result, Starlink cannot be considered a guaranteed channel in any situation. Its effectiveness depends on camouflage, the conditions of application, and the availability of reserves.

Alternative Satellite Systems for the Military

In addition to Starlink, other satellite systems with different priorities are used in military practice. Some of them are oriented toward the stability and predictability of the channel, some toward covertness or operation in difficult conditions of radio-electronic confrontation.

Such systems may yield in speed or throughput but win in resilience and controllability. That is precisely why they are often applied for command or backup communication channels, where what is important is not the volume of data but guaranteed transmission. The choice of an alternative satellite system is determined by the task, and not by the popularity of the solution.

Ground Repeaters and Combined Communication Systems

To reduce dependence on satellite channels, combined communication systems are widely applied in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They combine satellite channels with ground repeaters and local wireless networks.

Ground repeaters make it possible to transmit a signal between units, reducing the number of active satellite terminals. An example of such a solution is the wireless repeater «Vishchun» 5.8 GHz, which is used as an element of local communication networks between units and control points.

Such an approach makes it possible to distribute the load between different channels and increase the survivability of the communication system as a whole.

When It Is Expedient to Switch to Backup Channels

The switch to backup communication channels in the Armed Forces of Ukraine is not an emergency step but a pre-planned element of command. Such a switch is carried out in the event of a deterioration in the quality of the main channel, an increase in detection risks, or the active operation of the enemy’s EW assets.

Backup channels can include alternative satellite systems, ground repeaters, or other wireless solutions. The key task is to maintain the controllability of units even in the event of the loss of one of the channels.

The effectiveness of a communication system is determined not by the availability of one powerful asset but by readiness for rapid switching between different channels.

Integrating Different Types of Communication Into a Single Command System

The most resilient communication systems are built on the principle of integration. Satellite channels, ground repeaters, and local networks work as a single mechanism, where each element compensates for the weak sides of the others.

Such integration makes it possible to maintain the command of units even in difficult conditions and reduces the risk of the complete loss of communication. Satellite communication is an important element of command in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but it cannot exist in isolation. Starlink remains a widespread solution, but its use requires redundancy and supplementation with alternative channels.
