During the period of full-scale war, citizenship in Ukraine turns into one of the key instruments of security and stability. This is not just a legal status — it is real protection, social guarantees, access to international aid, and the support of a state that is fighting for its freedom.

At the same time, citizenship is also responsibility, participation in common efforts, and the possibility to influence the future of the country.

BlueBird Tech, a Ukrainian producer of military technologies, created this material for servicemen, veterans, their families, volunteers, and all Ukrainians who want to understand more deeply what it means to be a citizen of Ukraine, which rights and possibilities this gives, and which risks the renunciation of the citizenship of Ukraine carries in modern conditions.

What “Citizenship” Is and What It Means to Be a Citizen?

In accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On the Citizenship of Ukraine”, citizenship is a stable legal connection between a person and the state, which determines in what way a person is integrated into the political, legal, and social system of the country.

This connection is not temporary and not formal: it covers practically all aspects of a person’s interaction with the state — from the protection of their rights to the fulfillment of civic duties

Ukrainian citizenship means:

  1. Belonging to the people and the state. A citizen is part of Ukrainian society, which forms and protects the state.
  2. Guaranteed protection from the state abroad. The Ukrainian passport opens visa-free travel to the EU. And, most importantly — temporary protection in Europe, which millions of Ukrainians received precisely thanks to citizenship.

That is, the right to:

  • legal residence,
  • medical service,
  • social payments,
  • study and employment.

This is direct proof that citizenship works not only inside the country but also throughout the world, where Ukrainians are provided with real instruments of protection.

  1. Legal status and access to state services. Citizens have the right to: medical and psychological help, education, social payments, protection in court.
  2. Political rights. Participation in the life of the country, including elections, social programs, and defense initiatives.

Rights and Duties of a Citizen of Ukraine

Rights of a citizen of Ukraine:

  • protection of the state in Ukraine and abroad;
  • freedoms: of speech, conscience, movement;
  • access to education, medicine, and social services;
  • participation in state governance.

Duties of a citizen:

  • adherence to laws;
  • payment of taxes;
  • respect for the rights of others;
  • participation in the defense of the state.

During the war, these duties have a special weight. Every person who has Ukrainian citizenship is part of the nationwide IT, diplomatic, volunteer, or defense system. That is precisely why it is so important to help the army — through donations, volunteering, or the purchase of necessary goods for units, in particular modern dome electronic warfare systems from BlueBird Tech.

Obtaining the Citizenship of Ukraine

In accordance with the law, the citizenship of Ukraine can be acquired:

  • by birth;
  • by territorial origin;
  • as a result of admission to citizenship;
  • as a result of restoration in citizenship;
  • as a result of adoption;
  • as a result of the establishment of custody or guardianship over a child, the placement of a child in a health care institution, an educational institution, or another children’s institution, in a family-type children’s home or a foster family;
  • as a result of the establishment of guardianship over a person recognized by the court as incapable;
  • in connection with the presence of the citizenship of Ukraine in one or both parents of the child;
  • as a result of the confirmation of paternity or maternity or the establishment of the fact of paternity or maternity;
  • on other grounds provided for by the international treaties of Ukraine.

Each procedure has clear requirements: the term of residence, knowledge of the state language, the absence of criminal records, adherence to the Constitution.

This way the state ensures that citizenship is received by those who are really ready to be part of the Ukrainian community and support its development.

The Existence of Renunciation of Citizenship

The law provides for the possibility of renunciation of the citizenship of Ukraine, however, it is not automatic but an exclusively legal procedure that requires:

  • an official appeal of the person;
  • a package of documents;
  • verification by state bodies;
  • a decree of the President of Ukraine.

This is a complex process that is far from always possible during the period of martial law or in the presence of security limitations.

The Consequences of the Renunciation of Citizenship

The renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship entails substantial consequences:

  • the loss of consular and diplomatic protection abroad;
  • the absence of access to social guarantees and state programs;
  • the impossibility of taking part in elections;
  • international possibilities, in particular temporary protection in the EU;
  • legal status, if a person becomes stateless (a person without citizenship);
  • the risk of finding oneself without citizenship;
  • the difficulty of repeated acquisition.

In the realities of war, such renunciation becomes significantly more risky, since it reduces the level of protection, access to social support, and legal possibilities.

Why the Renunciation of Citizenship Is Inappropriate Today

During the full-scale war, the citizenship of Ukraine is not only a status but a shield and a guarantee of support. It is precisely citizens who form the stability of the state system, support the AFU and volunteer programs.

The main reasons why the renunciation of citizenship today is an inappropriate decision:

1. Security value. The state provides protection, and international partners recognize citizens of Ukraine as participants of a state that is fighting for freedom.

2. Legal limitations. The process is complex, slow, and not always possible during the effect of martial law.

3. The risk of being left without protection. A person without citizenship in wartime is especially vulnerable.

4. Moral and social role. Every citizen is part of the national resistance, economic resilience, and defense.

5. The importance of unity. Support of the army through volunteering, donations, or the purchase of military goods is one of the most valuable contributions to our victory.

For an understanding of  how to become a volunteer for the AFU and the role of volunteers in the support of the army  on the part of each citizen, read separately in our article.

The Importance of Ukrainian Citizenship in Wartime

The citizenship of Ukraine is not just a legal connection. It is responsibility, support, and a force that unites us in the most difficult period of modern history. The renunciation of citizenship in wartime is not only legally complex but also a risky step that can deprive a person of support, security, and possibilities both in Ukraine and abroad.
