After the full-scale invasion, the role of the air defense of Ukraine grew many times over. It is a complex, echeloned (multi-level) system that combines the newest Western technologies, deeply modernized Soviet heritage, and unique tactical solutions. It is precisely air defense that is the shield of the country, the main goal of which is to detect the enemy before it delivers a strike.

This article will help everyone not involved in military matters to figure out how air defense works from the moment of the detection of a threat to its destruction, of which components this «iron dome» consists, and why the work of air defense radars is so important.

What Air Defense Is and What Its Uniqueness Is

Air defense is a multi-level system that unites radars, anti-aircraft complexes, command centers, and specialists who work as a single mechanism. Its goal is to protect the airspace of Ukraine from any threat, regardless of where it comes from. The system detects enemy objects, analyzes their trajectory, and reacts instantly. If a missile, drone, or aircraft appears in the sky, air defense intercepts them even before they manage to do harm.

The uniqueness of Ukrainian air defense consists in flexibility and adaptivity. It combines Soviet complexes of the S-300 and «Buk» type with modern Western systems Patriot, NASAMS, IRIS-T. Such a combination creates a flexible defense, capable of reacting to various types of targets from «Shahed» drones to supersonic «Kinzhal» missiles.

In fact, air defense is a living, smart network that constantly learns and improves. Its strength is in the people who know how to make decisions in seconds and work without errors.

How Air Defense Works: From Detection to the Destruction of a Target

When a siren sounds, it does not mean the start of the end – it is an indicator that the system has already received data, analyzed the threat, and activated the mechanisms of protection. It is important to remember: the very sound of air defense working is only the final stage of visible activity; the real work of the system began significantly earlier. Here is a simplified but accurate algorithm:

  1. Detection. A powerful early-warning radar (radiolocation station), located hundreds of kilometers away, records the launch of a missile or the takeoff of a group of UAVs. The information is transmitted instantly.
  2. Identification. The system in automatic or semi-automatic mode determines the type of target: «friend» or «foe», a ballistic missile or a drone. It is precisely at this stage that the approximate trajectory and the time of approach are calculated.
  3. Transmission of data. The information arrives at the national command center. It is then that the air-raid alert is announced for the regions that found themselves under threat.
  4. Making a decision. On the basis of the type of target (for example, a ballistic missile) and its flight trajectory, the operator in the command center or an automated system makes a decision about destruction. The most effective means of destruction is chosen.
  5. Destruction. The corresponding anti-aircraft missile complex (SAM) receives the target designation, captures the target with its own guidance radar, and launches an interceptor missile.

The Air Defense Radar – the Foundation of the Entire Protection System

Radars are the heart of any air defense. Without it, even the most modern anti-aircraft missile complex will not be able to work, since it is precisely the radar that «sees» the target and transmits the coordinates to the guidance system. Such radars work around the clock, in any weather conditions, continuously scanning the airspace with radio waves. 

Types of radars in the [air defense] system:

  • Surveillance radars (long-range detection). They track the situation over hundreds of kilometers and are the first to record the launches of missiles or the appearance of aircraft.
  • Tactical radars. They work at smaller distances and altitudes, specialize in the detection of complex targets, such as cruise missiles or drones that fly low above the ground.
  • Guidance radars. Installed directly on anti-aircraft complexes (for example, in the systems “Buk”, NASAMS, or Patriot). They ensure the precise tracking of the target and guide the interceptor missile onto it.

A modern air defense radar is capable of detecting a missile or drone the size of a car at a distance of over 200 km.

The Structure of Air Defense

The air defense of Ukraine is built according to the principle of multi-level (echeloned) defense. This means that the airspace is controlled by several layers of protection from the far zone to the near, where mobile groups work. Each level is responsible for its own type of threats and has its own specialization.

Why Air Defense Is the Key to Security and Future Victory

Without the effective work of air defense, the enemy could with impunity destroy critical infrastructure (power plants, bridges), logistical hubs, and military objects in the rear. It is precisely air defense that makes such attacks ineffective, and the sky more secure.

Thanks to it, the country receives several critically important advantages at once:

  • Safety of the population. Shot-down missiles are the saved lives of peaceful people.
  • Protection of infrastructure. The systems cover energy hubs, bridges, transport corridors.
  • Support of the army. Without the enemy’s dominance in the air, the AFU can act effectively on the ground.
  • Resilience of the economy. Preserved infrastructure means the stable work of enterprises and transport.

According to the official data of the Air Force, Ukrainian air defense regularly shoots down over 80–90% of cruise missiles and kamikaze drones.

The Future of the Air Defense of Ukraine: Artificial Intelligence and New Technologies

Ukraine not only operates foreign systems but also actively creates its own solutions. The development goes in three main directions:

  • FrankenSAM projects. The integration of Western missiles with Soviet launchers “Buk” and S-300. This makes it possible to increase the effectiveness of old systems without the complete replacement of equipment.
  • Artificial intelligence. The use of AI algorithms for the faster detection and classification of targets, especially during massed drone attacks.
  • New radars. The development of Ukrainian radiolocation stations that consume less energy, require minimal servicing, and are capable of working in conditions of active interference.

Ukrainian engineers are working on the creation of mobile air defense complexes of a new generation, capable of autonomously detecting, tracking, and destroying targets with the help of artificial intelligence.
