In modern warfare, medical support is just as critical an element of defense as armament, logistics, and troop command. The Medical Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is responsible for the organization, coordination, and management of the entire system of military medicine — from first aid directly on the battlefield to the treatment, evacuation, and rehabilitation of the wounded in the rear.
Medical Forces of the AFU: Definition and Place in the Military Structure
The Medical Forces of the AFU are the totality of command bodies, medical units, institutions, and services that ensure the health care of servicemen in peacetime and during combat operations. They are a full-fledged component of the military structure and work in close interaction with combat, rear, and command units.
Military medicine differs from civilian medicine in its conditions of work. The Medical Forces act in a risk zone, under fire or near combat operations, often having limited time to make decisions. That is precisely why the military medicine system is built to act quickly, clearly, and without unnecessary approvals.
Tasks of the Medical Forces Command
The Medical Forces Command carries out the centralized management of the entire military medicine system and determines the rules of its functioning. The main tasks are the planning of the medical support of troops, the management of medical units of different levels, the organization of the evacuation of the wounded, the provision of medical personnel and equipment, as well as the adaptation of the system to changes in the combat situation.
In practice, this means that the Command is responsible for ensuring that medical aid is available at every stage — from the battlefield to the rear hospital. It is precisely here that decisions are made regarding the deployment of stabilization points, the redistribution of resources, and the implementation of modern approaches to the treatment of combat injuries.

During combat operations, medical support is organized on a staged principle. First, pre-medical aid is provided at the site of the wounding, then — the stabilization of the condition, after which evacuation to medical facilities, where full-fledged treatment is possible, is carried out.
For this system to work without failures, constant coordination and communication between medics, evacuation groups, and the command are necessary. In addition to the physical aspect, medical support also affects the morale of the troops. The understanding that a wounded soldier will receive aid quickly and professionally increases trust in the command and the resilience of units in long-term combat conditions.
