On July 28, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at Fort Bliss military base in Texas to mark the opening of the first two of ten new 3D-printed barracks. The project was officially declared the largest deployment of robotic construction technology in the history of the US Department of the Army.

The project involves the construction of ten open-bay barracks for the temporary accommodation of service members, with a total capacity of up to 560 people. Each building has a floor area of 5,772 square feet (approximately 536 m²), and the entire complex spans 78,000 square feet (over 7,200 m²). Printing all ten buildings took only 58 days, and the full cycle from contract signing to project delivery was approximately nine months. This is four times faster than traditional construction, with cost savings of 9.3% compared to Army Corps of Engineers standards.

The first two buildings were unveiled this week, with the remaining eight scheduled to be commissioned in September 2026.

The contractor is ICON, an Austin, Texas-based company and one of the world leaders in robotic construction and large-scale 3D printing.

The walls are printed using ICON’s proprietary technology — the Vulcan robot, which layer by layer applies the company’s own Lavacrete concrete mix on top of a foundation. The company has previously used this technology to print a prototype Martian habitat for NASA, affordable housing in Mexico, and residential communities in the United States. The current project builds on a 2025 pilot program during which two experimental buildings of a similar design were constructed at Fort Bliss.

Throughout its collaboration with the US government, the company and its partners have conducted more than 65 full-scale wall system tests and more than 100 tests of individual wall system components.

In the near term, the new barracks will house service members of Task Force Bastogne, who are operating as part of Joint Task Force – Southern Border under Operation Ardent Vanguard: a mission to secure the territorial integrity of the US southern border.

Fort Bliss Commanding General Major General Curtis Taylor linked the opening of the facility directly to combat readiness:

When a unit finishes an exhausting shift at the border, soldiers will no longer have to drive an hour through the desert to a temporary camp. Instead, they will return to permanent, energy-efficient housing just steps away from gyms, dining facilities, and recreation areas.
