Unmanned aerial vehicles have become an integral part of the modern world over recent years. They are used in military affairs, rescue operations, agriculture, infrastructure monitoring, and even everyday filming. However, under the general word «drone» hides a large number of different systems that differ substantially in design and capabilities.
Main Types of Drones and Their Differences
Modern drones are conditionally divided into several large groups according to the principle of flight and design. The most widespread are quadcopters and other multirotor drones, fixed-wing UAVs, hybrid systems, mini-drones, and specialized craft for specific tasks.
The main differences between them lie in the action range, flight duration, maneuverability, and payload capabilities. Quadcopters are convenient for working at short distances and in conditions of limited space, fixed-wing drones are effective for long flights, and mini-drones are indispensable where quick and inconspicuous reconnaissance is needed.
To better understand by what criteria drones are divided at all, it is worth turning to the article: «Classification of UAVs: main approaches and criteria of division». It helps to systematically understand the logic of choosing different types of drones.
Quadcopters and Multirotor Drones
Quadcopters and multirotor drones are today the most popular and most widespread type of UAV. They have four, six, or eight propellers, can hover in place, perform precise maneuvers, and work at a low altitude.
In the civilian sphere, such craft are used for photo and video filming, the inspection of objects, the monitoring of buildings, and search operations. In military conditions, quadcopters are applied for close reconnaissance, observing the enemy, correcting fire, and carrying out point tasks. They deploy quickly, are easy to master, and do not require complex infrastructure.
This class also includes the “Zhakh 10” FPV Drone — a strike drone that combines high maneuverability and guidance accuracy. Such systems demonstrate how effective multirotor drones can be in modern combat conditions. Their main limitation is the relatively short flight duration, usually within 20–40 minutes, and an action range of on average up to 5–10 kilometers.
Fixed-Wing and Hybrid Drones
Fixed-wing UAVs work on a different principle than quadcopters. They use the lift of a wing, thanks to which they are able to fly significantly longer and cover great distances. Such systems are applied for long-term surveillance, the patrolling of territories, cartography, and deep reconnaissance.
The advantage of fixed-wing drones lies in their great range and economy. They can stay in the air from two to eight hours, and sometimes longer, and work tens or hundreds of kilometers from the control point. At the same time, a site or catapult is usually needed for their launch, and landing requires greater preparation.
Hybrid drones combine the properties of fixed-wing and multirotor systems. They can take off vertically, like a quadcopter, and then switch to an economical flight mode. Such craft are especially useful where a great range is needed but there are no conditions for a classic takeoff.
Mini-Drones and Compact UAVs
Mini-drones and compact drones are a separate category oriented toward quick and inconspicuous application. They have small dimensions, light weight, and usually limited indicators of range and flight time.
Such craft are especially effective in conditions of urban development, indoors, in basements, hangars, and narrow passages. Mini-quadcopters make it possible to quickly inspect a building, check a dangerous zone, or carry out reconnaissance without risk to people. They can be equipped with ordinary cameras or even thermal imagers for working at night.
The main advantage of this type of UAV is mobility. They are easy to carry, can be launched in literally a minute, and operator training does not require a long time. The limitations are a short range, usually within a few kilometers, and a short flight time, but for many tasks this is quite sufficient.
Specialized Types of Drones by Task
In addition to universal platforms, there is a large number of specialized UAVs created for specific tasks. These are communication repeater drones, craft for electronic warfare, drones for the delivery of cargo, search-and-rescue systems, and platforms for technical monitoring.
A separate important area is strike FPV drones, which are controlled by an operator in real time and make it possible to carry out precision engagement. It is precisely such systems that have become one of the most widespread tools of modern warfare thanks to their relative cheapness and high effectiveness.
Specialized drones are not universal but are maximally adapted to their specific role. Therefore, when choosing a drone, it is always important to clearly understand exactly which task it must solve.
Types of UAVs Used in Ukraine
In Ukraine today, practically the entire spectrum of modern unmanned systems is applied. The most widespread in military conditions are reconnaissance quadcopters with cameras and thermal imagers, fixed-wing UAVs for long-term surveillance, strike FPV drones, and kamikaze drones.
In real practice, different types of drones are often used together. For example, a mini-drone can perform quick reconnaissance at a short distance, a quadcopter can correct the actions of a unit, and a fixed-wing UAV can provide surveillance at a great distance. Such a combination makes it possible to solve complex tasks more effectively.
In the civilian sphere in Ukraine, quadcopters with a camera for filming and inspections, drones for agricultural monitoring, search-and-rescue craft, and compact drones for working in city conditions are popular. Practice shows that the greatest demand is for simple and reliable systems that can be quickly mastered and promptly applied.
Conclusions
Modern drones are represented by a large number of different types, each of which has its own capabilities and area of application. Quadcopters, fixed-wing and hybrid craft, mini-drones, and specialized systems solve fundamentally different tasks and complement one another.
An understanding of what kinds of drones there are and how they differ helps to correctly choose equipment for specific conditions. This is important for forming technical specifications for procurement, training operators, planning operations, and the effective use of resources.
The competent choice of the type of UAV makes it possible to avoid unnecessary expenses, increase the effectiveness of work, and better adapt to the real conditions of operation. That is precisely why knowledge about the main kinds of drones is basic for everyone who works with drones.
