Military service in Ukraine can differ substantially depending on whether it takes place directly in the combat zone or in rear units.

What a Combat Military Unit Is

A combat military unit is a military subunit whose main task is the direct waging of combat operations, participation in defense or offense, and the execution of tactical and strategic operations.

Combat units include mechanized, assault, air-assault subunits, artillery, reconnaissance, and other combat subunits that directly carry out combat tasks.

The formation of combat units is carried out from servicemen who have undergone appropriate training and are recognized as fit by their state of health.

What Service in a Rear Unit Is

Service in the rear is undergoing military service in subunits that do not take direct part in combat clashes but ensure the stable functioning of the army. A combat subunit is precisely a key element of the state’s defense capability and a component of the structure of the AFU.

This is about logistics, repair, communication, medicine, document management, and training and staff functions. Without rear units, combat subunits cannot effectively carry out their tasks, since it is precisely the rear that is responsible for supply, coordination, and support.

Who Can Serve in a Rear Unit

The following can be assigned to service in rear subunits:

  • military personnel with limitations by their state of health (per the conclusion of the MMC);
  • military personnel after a wound or those who need rehabilitation;
  • persons with civilian specialties that are critically important for the rear (medics, lawyers, accountants, IT specialists, engineers).

Assignment to a rear unit is carried out exclusively within the bounds of legislation and by the decision of the appropriate bodies of military management.

Whether It Is Possible to Transfer From a Combat Unit to a Rear One

The question of how to transfer to a rear unit is one of the most common among servicemen. Such a transfer is possible but only in the presence of legal grounds and with adherence to the established procedure.

The main grounds for transfer:

  • the conclusion of the military medical commission;
  • a deterioration in the state of health or the consequences of a wound;
  • the presence of a specialty critically important for rear subunits;
  • service necessity by the decision of the command.

The transfer procedure involves the submission of a report, its consideration by the commander of the unit, and approval at the level of the appropriate management bodies. The detailed algorithm of transfer is regulated by internal orders and the electronic accounting system (in particular, through the official resources of the Ministry of Defense).

Technological Solutions for Protecting Units

The difference between combat and rear military service lies not only in the place of carrying out tasks but primarily in the functions, the level of risks, and the nature of responsibility. Combat subunits work directly in conditions of threat, while rear units ensure stability, controllability, and the continuity of the work of the troops.

At the same time, the effectiveness of each of these formats largely depends on the level of technical equipment and the protection of personnel. That is precisely why modern technological solutions play a key role both on the front line and beyond it. BlueBird Tech works in this area, developing assets such as the vehicle-mounted EW “Hrets XL”, which increases the level of protection of units from threats from the air.
