In early July, Swedish company Nordic Air Defence (NAD) conducted the first public live test of its K100XR interceptor drone, demonstrating to journalists how the aircraft detects and destroys a target in real time.

According to the company, the K100XR is an ultra-compact aircraft: approximately 30 centimeters long, made primarily from carbon fiber, and weighing around half a kilogram. It uses a propeller engine and is capable of reaching speeds exceeding 354 km/h.

According to the manufacturer, the interceptor can patrol a designated area for at least 20 minutes while waiting for a target, operate at altitudes of around 1,000 meters, and engage targets at distances of over three kilometers. An onboard artificial intelligence system independently detects, classifies, and tracks a hostile drone without constant operator input. The company refers to this mode as “fire-and-forget.”

A built-in thermal infrared seeker allows the interceptor to operate at night and in cloudy weather, and the system can switch to a fully autonomous, radio-silent mode. This option was specifically designed for use in the event of signal jamming.

Nordic Air Defence positions the K100XR primarily as a means of countering Shahed-type drones — Iranian loitering munitions that Russia mass-produces and deploys against Ukraine in the thousands. The company also considers the aircraft an effective countermeasure against other reconnaissance UAVs.

The exact cost of the K100XR is unknown: the company only states that the aircraft costs “a few thousand dollars” and offers the following comparison: three interceptors will cost less than a single Stinger man-portable missile, priced at approximately $480,000 USD.

It is known that the company plans to conduct operational field trials of the K100XR in Ukraine, although no specific timelines or deployment details have been announced yet.

It is worth noting that similarly purposed interceptor drones are already actively being used in Ukraine. For instance, the LITAVR model demonstrates comparable speed but surpasses the K100XR in range (up to 65 km) and flight altitude (over 9,000 m). Other domestic solutions include the Sting and P1-SUN interceptors.
