4 a.m. on 24 February 2022 — a day that all Ukrainians remembered forever. The phrase that then sounded in almost every home: “Wake up, the war has begun”. Missiles attack various regions of Ukraine, and russian equipment advances deep into the country.
Back then, in the world they did not much believe in Ukraine; some media predicted a few days until the capture of Kyiv — the russians also hoped for this. However, Ukrainians held out. Back then we were extremely dependent on Western aid, but over 4 years Ukraine changed the rules of the game.
How Ukraine Created Military Technologies
Over these years of full-scale war, the country traveled the path from critical dependence on external supplies of armament to the creation of its own world-class defense technologies. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian technological ecosystem was going through a crisis of resources, logistics, and time. But it was precisely these circumstances that became the driver of engineering mobilization.
The main force became the quick creation of working solutions “here and now”, instead of bringing technologies to absolute ideal. It was precisely this philosophy that became the basis of the development of Ukrainian defense production.
As soon as a device reaches the level of “sufficient quality”, it is quickly transferred to military units for practical application. Further modernizations take place already during combat use thanks to powerful feedback.
“Those who work on this are people to whom it hurts. Because to stand aside is simply impossible. The only thing we do is create benefit. Sometimes devices may not be ideal, but they already have enough technical capabilities for application. We choose the speed of our solutions” — notes the co-founder of the company BlueBird Tech Valeriy Zarubin.
Drones Became a Symbol of the Ukrainian Technological Era
One of the main achievements of technological Ukraine became the development of a wide spectrum of unmanned systems. The turning point became the year 2023; it was then that attention to Ukrainian defense-tech substantially grew.
Ukrainian engineers showed the world modern reconnaissance drones, strike systems, interceptor drones, and naval platforms. Four years ago, the idea of shooting down drones with drones looked fantastical. Today this is the reality of modern battle, which Ukrainian engineers created.
Ukraine has effectively formed a new doctrine of the application of unmanned systems, which already affects the defense strategies of other states. Countries of the world have begun to adapt their own military-technological concepts, invest in the production of unmanned systems, and rethink the approach to modern war. Ukrainian combat experience has become a unique laboratory of real technological solutions.

The Future of the Ukrainian Defense Sector
Valeriy Zarubin emphasizes that the potential of Ukrainian developments already now has global significance. However, it is important that Ukraine should not concentrate exclusively on one type of technology — the development of the entire ecosystem is important.
Ukraine must learn not only to create technologies but also to scale them, enter international markets, and form its own brands, and for this the coordination of the entire market is needed.
“Cooperation is always better than competition. In a situation like that in Ukraine, there is no sense in spending energy on the struggle between producers — right now interaction is needed” — emphasizes the co-founder of BlueBird Tech Valeriy Zarubin.
Today, Ukrainian technologies are no longer only a response to the challenges of war. They are the basis of the future economic and technological development of the country. Ukraine is gradually becoming a state that not only solves complex tasks but also creates technologies that can change the world security market. And the main thing — the development continues.
