The Role of Volunteers in the Support of the Army

With the beginning of the full-scale invasion, volunteering in Ukraine turned into a powerful national movement that became the second support for our army. If in 2022 the help was spontaneous, then in 2025 volunteering became systemic, organized, and an extremely active part of the Ukrainian resistance.

Everyone can find their own way to join, from the weaving of nets to work in the IT troops. The main thing is to understand how to do this safely and with maximum benefit.

Types of Volunteering: Not Only Money and Drones

The notion that help to the army is only donations for drones or vehicles has long become outdated. Modern volunteering is multifaceted, and everyone can find a niche in accordance with their possibilities, skills, and time.

  • Production and weaving. Camouflage nets, kikimora suits, trench candles, dry food – all this is produced by thousands of hands in the rear. Such centers exist in almost every city, and they always need working hands.
  • Auto-volunteering. If you have your own transport, you can become an invaluable logistician. Volunteers for the AFU often need help with the transportation of humanitarian cargo, the evacuation of people from front-line zones, or the driving of vehicles for the military from abroad.
  • IT volunteering. The blocking of enemy resources, the fight against disinformation, the development of useful applications for the military and civilians – this is only part of the tasks that cyber volunteers carry out.
  • Psychological and humanitarian help. The support of the wounded, help to the families of the military, the displaced, veterans is also an important part of the front.

How to Start? A Simple Algorithm for Everyone

The question «how to become a volunteer» often arises in those who want to act but do not know where to start. The path from the desire to help to real actions is simple if one adheres to several rules.

Step 1: Find your niche

Honestly assess your resources:

  • Time: How many hours a week are you ready to devote to volunteering?
  • Skills: Do you know how to sew, cook, repair cars, write texts, or manage projects?
  • Resources: Do you have a car, a free space, a computer, or useful contacts?

Do not try to do everything at once. It is better to concentrate on one matter but perform it with quality. This will make your volunteering more effective.

Step 2: Choose a verified fund or create your own initiative

This is the most important moment, since volunteer activity must be safe and transparent.

How to check a fund or organization:

  1. Check the registration. The organization must be officially registered. The presence of the fund in the Register of Non-Profit Institutions and Organizations can be checked on the site of the Tax Service.
  2. Look through the reports. Funds openly publish financial reports.
  3. Look for reviews. See what is written about the fund in the media.
  4. Check the contacts. Funds always have an address, a site, and founders.

If you decided to create your own initiative, start with small fundraisers among friends and acquaintances and be sure to report for every spent hryvnia. 

Step 3: Report on your work

Regardless of the scale, always publish the results. Photos, receipts, acts, gratitude from the military — this forms trust.

Safety: How Not to Run Into Fraudsters

So that your help does not get into the hands of swindlers, adhere to simple rules:

  • Check the fundraisers. Do not send money to the personal cards of unknown people from social networks. Check the information through official pages.
  • Demand reports. Real volunteers always publish reports.
  • Take the details from official sources. Copy the card or account number only from the official site of the fund or its verified page.

Sometimes it seems that the contribution of one person does not matter. But it is precisely from a thousand small actions that a huge wave of support is composed.
