In modern warfare, camouflage has ceased to be a secondary element. In conditions of the active use of drones, thermal imagers, and optical surveillance assets, even a well-prepared soldier can be detected through mistakes during camouflage.

What Individual Camouflage Is

The individual camouflage of a soldier is a system of measures and assets aimed at reducing the visibility of a specific serviceman to the enemy. It is applied during movement, observation, the defense of positions, and the execution of combat tasks.

Individual camouflage is used:

  • in open terrain;
  • in a forest or tree plantings;
  • in urban development;
  • during the day and at night.

The main goal is to complicate the detection of the soldier by visual, thermal, and technical assets. That is precisely why military camouflage is not limited only to camouflage clothing and requires a comprehensive approach, in particular the correct choice of gear elements and military uniform in accordance with the conditions of service.

Main Types of Military Camouflage

Tactical camouflage is divided into several areas, each of which is responsible for reducing a certain type of visibility.

Visual Camouflage

This type of concealment is aimed at ensuring that the soldier does not stand out against the background of the terrain and does not have a clear silhouette.

It includes:

  • camouflage clothing selected for the season and terrain;
  • camouflage capes, nets;
  • concealing exposed areas of skin;
  • eliminating the glare of gear, optics, metal, and plastic parts.

Camouflage attire is applied during movement, observation, and the defense of positions. It works only when the background, lighting, and shadows are taken into account.

Thermal Camouflage

To reduce the visibility of a serviceman to thermal imagers and drones, thermal camouflage measures are used.

The main principles:

  • the use of heat-reflective or heat-shielding capes;
  • the correct use of soil, shelters, vegetation;
  • avoiding sharp temperature changes after physical exertion.

Thermal camouflage is most often used at night. Without it, even a soldier well camouflaged on the outside can be quickly detected.

Behavioral Camouflage

Behavioral camouflage is a set of actions that reduce the likelihood of detection through movement, sound, or light.

It includes:

  • control of the pace of movement;
  • avoiding sharp gestures;
  • the minimization of noise and light sources;
  • changing routes and the absence of template actions.

How to Correctly Choose Camouflage Assets

When choosing concealment assets, one should proceed from the specific conditions in which the serviceman works. Camouflage is effective in a forest, does not work in an open field or in urban development, just as unsuitable seasonal colors immediately make a soldier noticeable.

When choosing camouflage assets, it is worth taking into account key criteria:

  • Terrain and season. It is necessary to take into account exactly where the soldier is located and accordingly choose camouflage: forest, open field, urban development, winter or summer conditions.
  • Type of threats. Camouflage assets are selected taking into account exactly what needs to be concealed from: optical observation, thermal imagers, or drones.
  • Combat task. The requirements for camouflage depend on the task being performed: observation, the defense of positions, or movement.

What Really Matters in Individual Camouflage

Individual camouflage measures are a critically important element of the survival and effectiveness of a serviceman in conditions of modern combat operations. The active use by the enemy of unmanned systems, thermal imagers, and optical surveillance assets makes any mistakes in camouflage potentially fatal. Therefore, camouflage must be not a separate element of gear but a systemic solution adapted to the real conditions of carrying out a combat task.
