The question “can one sign a contract for 1 year” worries many people who are considering the possibility of service in the army. Some want to test their strength and understand whether the military rhythm of life suits them. Others see in a one-year contract a chance to fulfill their duty before the state, but without long-term obligations. This is a natural desire — to first try, and only then make serious decisions. However, the legislation of Ukraine establishes clear rules.

Who Exactly Can Conclude a Contract With the AFU for 1 Year

Today, contract service of the AFU provides for a minimal term of three years for soldiers and sergeants and five years for officers. For flight specialties it is even longer — up to ten years. 

However, exceptions exist. During the period of mobilization or a special state, one can sign a contract “until the end of the special period” or “until the announcement of demobilization”.  Formally, this is not always exactly a year, but in practice the term may turn out to be shorter than the standard three years. For those who are not ready to immediately take on long responsibility, this is one of the real options. 

According to information from official sources, two categories of people can agree to a contract with the AFU for 1 year:

  • Citizens from 18 to 25 years, except officers, who enter contract service.
  • People with a medical or psychological education, regardless of age (on the condition that they correspond to other requirements).

Probation Period and Discharge After the Contract

Before signing a contract for one year, it is necessary to pass a probation period — it lasts from 1 to 6 months. During this period, correspondence to the requirements is checked: health, psychological readiness, the ability for service. If problems are revealed during the probation — the contract can be terminated ahead of schedule.

The idea of contract service is so that people could serve under a professional contract, with guarantees, and not just by call-up. A contract for one year is a new format that gives more flexibility. Especially for those who want to try but are not ready for a long obligation.

At the same time, this does not mean that everyone can receive precisely a one-year contract — much depends on the vacancies, the state of health, knowledge, and specialties. The Law “On Military Duty and Military Service” provides for such forms only during martial law.
