The Armed Forces of Ukraine are a complex and multifaceted organism, the effectiveness of which depends on a clear hierarchy and interaction between all links. An understanding of how the army is arranged, who is subordinate to whom, and which tasks certain units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine carry out makes it possible to assess its might and professionalism.

In this article we will examine the key elements of the structure of the AFU so that everyone from the military to the civilian could understand how the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine work and what role they play in the defense of the state.

Levels of Subordination of the Armed Forces

In order to understand how the army functions, it is important to know its hierarchy. The modern structure of the AFU is organized for maximum effectiveness in conditions of combat operations.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have the following general structure:

  1. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
  2. The Joint Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
  3. Types of the AFU:
    • Ground Forces
    • Air Force
    • Naval Forces
  4. Separate branches of forces of the AFU:
    • Special Operations Forces of the AFU
    • Territorial Defense Forces
    • Logistics Forces
    • Support Forces
    • Medical Forces
  5. Separate branches of troops of the AFU:
    • Air Assault Forces of Ukraine
    • Signal and Cybersecurity Troops
  6. Levels of management and units of the AFU
    • Bodies of military management
    • Formations
    • Military units
    • Higher military educational institutions
    • Training subdivisions of higher educational institutions
    • Institutions and organizations that do not belong to a concrete branch of troops

This model makes it possible to flexibly manage the troops and effectively distribute tasks between various units.

The General Structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

At the head of the entire system stands the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This is the main body of military management. It is precisely it that determines the strategic directions of defense, coordinates the actions of all types and branches of troops, and forms operational orders.
The General Staff is subordinate to the Commander-in-Chief of the AFU and coordinates the work of commands, military units, and training structures.

Alongside it functions the Joint Forces Command of the AFU. It is responsible for the leadership of the troops directly in the zone of combat operations, develops operational plans, carries out the management of groupings on the front.

Such a construction guarantees clear subordination:

Types of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

In the structure of the AFU, three main types of troops are distinguished. Each has its own command, system of subordination, and a clearly defined circle of tasks.

The Ground Forces of Ukraine

This is the most numerous type of the Armed Forces. They are responsible for waging combat operations on land, the defense of the territory of the state, assault and counter-offensive operations.

The composition of the Ground Forces includes:

  • mechanized,
  • tank,
  • artillery,
  • missile,
  • engineering and other units.

For example, within the composition of the Ground Forces operate the 47th separate mechanized brigade, the 110th separate mechanized brigade, the 33rd mechanized brigade, which are subordinate to corps and operational commands.

The Air Force

They carry out tasks of the protection of the airspace, the repelling of missile and aviation attacks, as well as the support of ground operations.

They are subordinate to a separate command that coordinates the actions of aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, and radiolocation subdivisions.

The Naval Forces

They protect the sea borders of Ukraine, carry out the guarding of ports and sea routes, conduct naval operations and landings.
Their composition includes surface ships, naval aviation, units of the Marine Corps, and coastal defense.

Separate Branches of Forces of the AFU

In addition to the three main types, in the structure of the AFU there exist separate branches of forces. Special-purpose units that carry out unique functions, being subordinate directly to the General Staff.

Such branches include:

  • Special Operations Forces of the AFU. Elite units that carry out strategic reconnaissance, sabotage, and counter-sabotage actions. Their tasks: to act in the enemy’s rear, ensure informational advantage, and conduct special operations of high complexity.
  • Territorial Defense Forces – formations that ensure the protection of regions and strategic objects in the rear.
  • Logistics Forces. They are responsible for supply, transportation, the provision of ammunition, equipment, and fuel.
  • Support Forces – cover engineering, signal, radiation-chemical, and other services.
  • Medical Forces, which organize medical provision, the evacuation of the wounded, and the rehabilitation of servicemen.

Separate Branches of Troops of the AFU

To this category belong specialized troops that ensure communication, information security, cyber defense, and technical support.
They coordinate actions between units, ensure the transmission of orders and the preservation of information even in conditions of active struggle in the information space.

For example, among the separate branches of troops one can name the 68th Ranger Brigade, which specializes in operations in wooded or mountainous terrain.

This group also includes the Air Assault Forces of Ukraine. Mobile, well-prepared units, capable of acting in the most difficult conditions. Their task: quick raid, assault, and airborne actions, breakthroughs of the enemy’s defense. An example is the 95th Air Assault Brigade, which is part of the 8th AAF Corps.

Educational and Auxiliary Structures

Separately function training subdivisions: higher military educational institutions, training centers, and ranges that prepare officers, sergeants, and specialists.
Institutions that ensure scientific, medical, and material support also operate, from research institutes to military hospitals.

Conclusion

The structure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is built on the principle of a clear hierarchy: from strategic leadership to combat units.

Each link  has its own role: the General Staff forms the strategy, the Joint Forces Command realizes it on the front, and brigades, battalions, and companies embody the decisions directly in battle.

Elite units, such as the Special Operations Forces of the AFU and the Air Assault Forces of Ukraine, reinforce the defense capability of the state and are an example of the highest professionalism of the modern Ukrainian army.
