The US Marine Corps has selected Allen Control Systems’ autonomous weapon system Bullfrog for integration into the Ground Based Air Defense program. The developer announced this on July 20.
Bullfrog is an AI-based autonomous turret that independently detects, tracks, and aims a machine gun or grenade launcher at aerial targets, including drones. The system will be integrated into the Light Marine Air Defense Integrated System — the Marine Corps’ most mobile counter-drone platform, mounted on two Polaris MRZR off-road vehicles. One serves as a command post, while the other carries an electronic warfare suite.
The baseline Bullfrog M240 variant is compatible with the M240 belt-fed machine gun and, according to the company, has a maximum effective engagement range of approximately 800 meters. It is capable of engaging medium and large drones weighing up to 600 kg. The company also offers variants chambered for the M2 machine gun, the M230 automatic cannon, and the M134 six-barrel minigun.
The key advantage highlighted by ACS is the cost per kill: the stated figure is approximately $10 per engagement. This fits into the broader concept of finding cheaper ways to defeat mass drone attacks.
Ukraine also has its own autonomous turret equivalents. In May 2026, former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov showcased an AI turret developed by a Brave1 cluster participant, which was at that point deployed across more than ten front-line units. The developer claimed it is capable of destroying even fiber-optic drones that are resistant to electronic warfare.
