Modern military uniform is the result of decades of the development of camouflage technologies and combat experience. The main goal of such clothing: to protect, camouflage, and ensure the comfort of a serviceman in any conditions.
In 2025, two types of camouflage remain the main samples: the pixel uniform MM-14 (official, approved for all branches of the troops), and the multicam military uniform, which is often chosen by assault and special units. The article will briefly and clearly help the military and their loved ones to distinguish pixel from multicam and choose a uniform in accordance with the tasks.
The Pixel Uniform MM-14: the Ukrainian Standard of Camouflage
The officially approved pattern MM-14 appeared in 2014 after the transition of the AFU to NATO standards. It was developed by Ukrainian military specialists, taking into account the geographical features of the country: fields, forests, steppes, and urbanized zones.
«Pixel» is a digital camouflage, created by analogy with the American UCP and Canadian CADPAT. The principle of the color is based on the breaking of spots into small squares that «blur» the silhouette of a person at a medium distance (30–100 m). Thanks to this, a fighter is difficult to identify even through optics.
Features of the «pixel» uniform
- Color range. Adapted to Central European landscapes: olive-green, sandy, brown.
- Materials. rip-stop (cotton combined with polyester), which «breathes» and does not tear.
- Purpose. Universal, therefore it has wide application among the military.
- Standards. Corresponds to the requirements of NATO STANAG 2333.

The Multicam Military Uniform: Flexibility and Technologies
Multicam was developed in the USA as a universal camouflage, created by the company Crye Precision (USA) in 2002. The main goal is to «blend in» with any environment, regardless of the season or the type of terrain. It effectively camouflages in mountains, deserts, forests, and cities. That is precisely why «multicam» is actively used by the Special Operations Forces, paratroopers, scouts, and assault groups.
The camouflage works thanks to smooth color gradients that hide the contours of the body, making a moving fighter less noticeable.
Features of the «multicam» uniform
- Colors. They use soft shades of green, beige, brown with smooth transitions.
- Fabric. Synthetic materials with elastane, an anti-dust covering, and a moisture-resistant layer, thanks to which the clothing is light and comfortable.
«Multicam» is the choice of mobile, fast, and technically equipped fighters. Where initiative and flexibility are needed, it is indispensable.
Why the Choice Between Pixel and Multicam Is Not Just Fashion
The main question is not which uniform is better. The pixel uniform is a symbol of the state and belonging to the AFU. It is the main type of uniform that defines the unified appearance of the Ukrainian army, recognizable in the world.
The multicam uniform is functionality and tactical freedom, created for non-standard tasks and mobile operations. Fighters choose «multicam» when lightness and universality are needed. For example, in drone or assault groups.
Both camouflages are part of one goal: to make the Ukrainian warrior effective, unnoticeable, and protected, therefore clothing must be chosen depending on the functionality.

The military uniform of the AFU of 2025 is the result of a balance between national identity and advanced technologies. The pixel uniform embodies the unity of the army, and the multicam military uniform its modernity and flexibility.
