The full-scale war changed not only the tactics of battles but also the approach to the saving of life. Today, military medicine in Ukraine is a high-tech, systemic field where every minute and every movement matter. This information will be useful to all who strive to master the skills of saving life – from the recognition of quality gear to the correct application of a tourniquet. It will help to act confidently and professionally in critical moments, preserving the life of oneself and comrades.

A key role  for the military is played by tourniquets and first-aid kits. Things that have become mandatory in the equipping of every fighter; their effectiveness often determines the boundary between life and death.

Tactical Medicine – Knowledge That Saves Lives

Tactical medicine is not just a set of medical means but a complex of knowledge and skills that save lives on the battlefield. In modern war, every fighter must be a «paramedic» for himself and a comrade, since the first minutes after a wound are decisive — it is precisely self-aid that determines whether a person will live or not.

Tactical medicine is:

  • the application of first aid in combat conditions;
  • the use of special gear (for example, a tourniquet for the military);
  • the training of every soldier in the basic skills of medical aid.

Today, the standards of the medical provision of the AFU are as close as possible to the protocols of NATO – TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care). They provide that every serviceman must be able to render aid to himself or a comrade, regardless of specialty. That is precisely why a tactical first-aid kit is a mandatory element of survival on the front.

How to Distinguish an Original From a Counterfeit

A tourniquet is a special hemostatic strap that makes it possible to quickly stop arterial or strong venous bleeding before the arrival of a combat medic or evacuation to a military hospital. The timely and correct application of a tourniquet can significantly reduce the quantity of losses on the battlefield.

A real tourniquet is not just a strap with a clasp. Its quality determines the life of a person, therefore it is important to know the key differences between an original and a copy.

It is necessary to pay attention to:

  • The material. Original models are made of reinforced nylon, which does not stretch and withstands load.
  • Markings. On quality tourniquets, the marking “CAT” or “SOF-T” is present. Corresponding to the standards used by military structures.
  • Fixator (windlass). It must be metal or of a strong polymer; when twisting it must not break.

The main types of tourniquets and their purpose:

  • CAT (Combat Application Tourniquet) in accordance with NATO standards. Simple, reliable, convenient for use with one hand.
  • SOF-T. Such a tourniquet is intended for prolonged operations; it has a strong metal mechanism, resistant to dirt and moisture.
  • SWAT-T – elastic, compact; suitable for civilians and as a backup option (sometimes used even for animals).

According to statistics, up to 60% of deaths on the battlefield could have been avoided if the tourniquet had been applied in time and with quality.

First-Aid Kits for the Military – a New Standard of Composition

In a modern army there are no «secondary» details. Every fighter of the AFU must be not only armed but also medically prepared. That is precisely why a military first-aid kit has become just as important an element of gear as a body armor or a helmet.

Military first-aid kits are not just a bag with bandages but a full-fledged individual complex of the saving of life, developed according to the IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit) standards adopted in the armies of NATO.
Its content is thought out so that any fighter can stop bleeding, restore breathing, and stabilize the condition before the arrival of the medical service or evacuation to a military hospital.

The main elements of a standard tactical first-aid kit

ComponentPurpose
Military tourniquet (1–2 pcs.)Stopping massive bleeding from limbs
Israeli bandage (Pressure Bandage)Fixation of wounds, stopping bleeding under pressure
Sealed chest plaster (Chest Seal)Sealing of penetrating wounds of the chest
Hemostatic agent (Celox, QuikClot)Accelerated clotting of blood in the case of deep wounds
Medical scissors, gloves, gauze, plasterQuick access to the wound, sterility
Thermal blanket (isothermal film)Protection from overcooling and shock
Marker (Permanent Marker)Recording of the time of the application of the tourniquet

The Significance of a Tactical First-Aid Kit on the Battlefield

At first glance, a tactical first-aid kit may seem just a bag with medical instruments. However, in reality it is a systemic instrument of survival, created according to the clear logic of combat medicine. Each of its components is the result of many years of experience of military medics and the rescue of the wounded in the real conditions of war.

Here are the main reasons why a first-aid kit is much more than just a set of things:

  • Systematicity. Each element of the first-aid kit has its place and logic of use, from the tourniquet to the sealed plaster. Its structure is thought out so as to act sequentially, without wasting a single second.
  • Autonomy. A fighter can completely independently render aid even under fire, without outside support.
  • Speed. All instruments are positioned so that one can act intuitively even in darkness or stress. One movement and the necessary means is already in the hands.

New Standards of Medical Provision 2025

In 2025, Ukraine introduced a single system of combat medicine – TCCC UA 2025, which became part of broader reforms of military medicine. The main thing is to create a unified standard of preparation and provision that guarantees that every fighter of the AFU has everything necessary for survival and the rendering of aid to comrades.

The TCCC UA 2025 system provides for:

  • Single first-aid kits for the military for all branches of the troops: standardized composition, structure, and marking according to the principles of NATO.
  • Standardization of tourniquets for the military. The official use of the models CAT Gen7 and SOF-T Wide, verified in combat conditions.
  • Regular training of personnel. The monthly practicing of actions in tactical medicine in conditions close to real battles.
  • Mandatory training before rotation. Every fighter undergoes testing and the repeated practical practicing of self-aid skills.

That is precisely why preparation in the sphere of tactical medicine has become a constant element of military service, and not a one-time course. TCCC UA 2025 is not only about equipping but about a culture of saving life that makes the Ukrainian army even more resilient and professional.

Conclusions

Modern military medicine in Ukraine is going through a stage of deep transformation.  Military tourniquets, first-aid kits, and new standards of preparation have become not just elements of equipping but a symbol of a new culture of saving life on the battlefield. Every serviceman must have the same set of means, knowledge, and skills in order to act quickly, precisely, and coordinatedly.

The Ukrainian army has proven: to save lives is just as important a weapon as any equipment. And it is precisely this knowledge, systematicity, and discipline that make our Armed Forces stronger every day.
