Military service in Ukraine is one of the key components of the defense capability of the state. It determines not only the readiness of the country to react to external threats but also forms an understanding among citizens of their duty before the Homeland. What Is Military Service?

Military service is a special type of state service that provides for the fulfillment by the citizens of Ukraine of the duty to protect the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the state. This is an activity connected with undergoing preparation, the execution of combat, training, administrative, and special tasks as part of military formations.

Military service is regulated by the Constitution of Ukraine, the Law «On Military Duty and Military Service», and other normative acts. 

It covers:

  • the preparation of servicemen;
  • participation in combat and special operations;
  • ensuring the defense of the state in peacetime and wartime;
  • the fulfillment of the international obligations of Ukraine regarding security.

Types of Military Service

Military service in Ukraine is divided into general and special types. Such a classification makes it possible to clearly delineate the functions of each category and ensure the effective organization of the defense forces.

General Types of Military Service

General types cover the main forms of service that citizens of Ukraine can undergo.

1. Conscript military service

Intended for the basic preparation of youth. Citizens are called up by age and undergo the training necessary for the formation of the reserve and the maintenance of defense capability.

2. Military service under contract

A voluntary form of service that is chosen by those who want to become a professional serviceman. Contract soldiers occupy staff military positions, take part in trainings, combat operations, and international exercises.

3. Service in the military reserve

Reservists are citizens who undergo periodic preparation and can be instantly involved in the execution of tasks in the case of a threat.

Moreover, today not only men serve in the AFU. More and more women in the army of the AFU occupy combat and technical positions, and have their own features regarding the call-up.

4. Cadre service (officer composition)

Officers are the basis of management and planning in the army. They are responsible for command, training, combat preparation, and the organization of units.

Special Types of Military Service

Special types are connected with the execution of special tasks that require specific preparation.

1. Service in the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine

Border guards protect the state border, control checkpoints, counteract smuggling and illegal migration.

2. Service in the National Guard of Ukraine

The NGU performs both combat and stabilization functions: the protection of public order, the defense of strategic objects, participation in special operations.

3. State Special Transport Service

Ensures the repair and protection of critical transport infrastructure, especially in conditions of war.

4. State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection

The specialists of this service are responsible for government communication, cyber protection, the security of information resources.

5. Territorial Defense Forces of Ukraine

These are units that are responsible for the defense of communities, the protection of infrastructure, the support of security at the local level. They are often manned by volunteers.

6. Alternative (non-military) service

Intended for citizens whose convictions do not allow undergoing military service with weapons. During the period of martial law, it is applied in a limited way, but legally remains a separate type of service.
